'Agent Carter' Bosses on Howard Stark: "He's Got Another Agenda"
Co-showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters tease a big reveal in episode four: "You are on a train hurtling toward the end."
Look out, Agent Carter. Billionaire playboy fugitive Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) is back, and he might be up up to no good.
Stark has been on the run since episode one, having been framed for selling weapons to U.S. enemies. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Stark's loyal butler Jarvis (James D'Arcy) have been attempting to clear Howard's name. When Peggy and Howard meet up on Tuesday's episode, it will not be a totally happy reunion, with Agent Carter accusing Stark of manipulating her.
"He's got another agenda that Peggy doesn't know about," co-showruner Michele Fazekas tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Well, she does and doesn't know about it, and that's a place where a lot of drama and tension can come from as well."
Tuesday's episode will set events into motion that carry the show through for the rest of season one.
"By the end of episode four, you are on a ride. You are on a train hurtling toward the end," says Fazekas.
Peggy and Jarvis have hit a few speed bumps on the ride so far. Last episode, the pair were fingered for the death of Krzeminski (Kyle Bornheimer), who was killed after Peggy and Jarvis called the SSA with an anonymous tip about the location of some Stark weapons. Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) doesn't know Peggy and Jarvis made the call, but he believes that whoever did was responsible for Krzeminski's death.
"For writers, it's been so much fun to get at these character moments and see these characters progress —between Peggy and Jarvis, between Peggy and her coworkers," says Butters. "She has a different dynamic and it's been very fun to explore each of those dynamics in the episode."
Fans noted that Krzeminski's death had real emotional consequences for the characters, something that doesn't always happen for minor characters in comic book TV. Of particular note was the final scene of the episode, which saw Peggy go to the diner and ask to tell Angie (Lyndsy Fonseca) about her tough day.
"Creatively, we have to have those. As much fun as it is to write fight sequences, you want those character moments to get to know these characters better," says Fazekas. "They are more than people who kick ass and shoot people. This is why you want to come back and check in on these people. That's one of my favorite scenes that we've done."
Agent Carter airs at 9 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC.
