Artists, sci fi fans and alien characters mingle at Portland Comic Con
Portland artist Randy Emberlin, best known as the artist/inker for Spider-Man, X-Men and Batman, spent most of Saturday afternoon cheerfully selling signed drawings to hundreds of fans who crowded into the Oregon Convention Center for day two of the three-day Wizard World Comic Con.
About 100 feet away, Jacksonville B-movie actor Bruce Campbell spent hours taking photos with Comic Con fans who stood in long, winding lines. Campbell, 56, earned a cult following for his “Evil Dead” and “Army of Darkness” movies and appearances on the TV series “Burn Notice,” then spent nearly three hours more signing autographs (for which fans each paid $40) for a couple hundred people, some who lined up hours ahead of time.
Emberlin has spent nearly 30 years as an artist and illustrator. For more than 20 years, he has worked as an artist/inker for prominent comics.
In addition to his drawing, Emberlin hosts art classes for students in Beaverton and Portland schools.
Emberlin and Campbell were just part of the fun in a crowded convention center exhibit hall, Jan. 23 to 25, as thousands of people, some in elaborate costumes or carrying oversized weapons seen in movies or graphic novels, made their way past rows of vendors selling replica samurai swords (ala “The Walking Dead”), Lego figures, mini-drones, posters and T-shirts, past stacks of comic books and even past a lanky Spock Vegas, the 6-foot-8 Toronto actor who is the spitting image of the Leonard Nimoy character on the original 1960s TV series.
In the lobby entrance to the event, a man dressed in a 9-foot Wookie costume gladly posed for photos with passersby.
More than a dozen regional graphic artists also sat behind rows of tables, greeting passersby, selling books, posters and drawings, including author Kip Manley of Portland, whose wife, Jenn Manley Lee, created the science fiction graphic novel 'Dicebox.'
Portland’s Wizard World Comic Con was one of 15 events planned this year by Wizard World Inc., a Las Vegas entertainment company that produces conventions across the nation. In addition to Campbell, actors and others appearing at the Portland event included “Grimm” actor Sasha Roiz, “The Walking Dead” actor Steven Yuen, “Orphan Black” actress Ksenia Solo, “Firefly” actor Alan Tudyk, “Homicide” actor Yaphet Kotto, “The Walking Dead” actor Michael Rooker and WWE Divas The Bella Twins.
