variety.com/2015/film/news/sundance-6-studios-battling-for-fest-favorite-dope-exclusive-1201414327/As many as six distributors are scrambling to bid on what has quickly become the hottest title at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: “Dope,” Rick Famuyiwa’s fresh and funny new comedy. Among the players circling the picture are Lionsgate, Relativity, The Weinstein Company, Open Road, A24 and Fox Searchlight, according to individuals with knowledge of the talks. It’s not clear how much the picture will fetch as talks are ongoing, but with this many players involved, the competition could get heated. The picture received an enthusiastic response after it premiered on Saturday night at the Library Theatre. It’s the story of a bunch of high school outcasts in a rough Los Angeles neighborhood who are enamored of ’90s hip-hop. There are also plenty of allusions to modern phenomenons such as Bitcoin. Mashable described the picture as “Existing somewhere between Juice, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Spring Breakers.” WME is handling sales negotiations for the picture. Talks should drag on late into the night and it may take days for a sale to close. It’s been a busy day for sales at Sundance, with Relativity landing the bawdy comedy, “The Bronze,” and A24 nabbing the horror film, “The Witch.”
