spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2015/01/16/the-smurfs-reboot-casts-homeland-star/Homeland‘s Mandy Patinkin has landed the role of Papa Smurf in Sony Pictures Animation’s reboot of The Smurfs, which — unlike its predecessors — will be a fully animated film. As The Hollywood Reporter recounts, the new film will tackle the origin story of the Smurfs. Like the original Peyo cartoon, Patinkin’s Papa Smurf will play the group’s wise — if bumbling — patriarch. Patinkin follows in the footsteps of the late Jonathan Winters, who voiced the character in the previous films. Patinkin’s past animation credits include Jock the Hero Dog and the English-language translation of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises. Kelly Asbury, who directed Shrek 2 and worked as a story artist on Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph, is slated to direct the film, with Jordan Kerner and Mary Ellen Bauder on board as producers. The Smurfs is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
