BitTorrent Advises Sony How to Release 'The Interview' Online
Peer-to-peer file-sharing company BitTorrent is urging Sony to "take back control" of The Interview by releasing it through its self-publishing platform.
BitTorrent, once known as an aid for Internet pirates, has pushed to legitimize online downloads by working with artists to release content in paid "bundles." A company spokesman says that a BitTorrent bundle "is in fact the very best way for Sony to take back control of their film."
Sony pulled The Interview from all theaters following a decision by the major theater chains to not screen the film, which was scheduled to open Dec. 25. Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment, Cinemark, Carmike Cinemas and Cineplex Entertainment all said they wouldn't show the film after hackers who infiltrated Sony's computer system signaled that moviegoers could be in danger if they saw the film in theaters.
Many Hollywood stars, including George Clooney, have called for Sony to release The Interview online, and BitTorrent's message details how Sony could self-publish the film.
"Bundle has a self-publishing platform that anyone from Sony can use: bundles.bittorrent.com/publish," the company spokesman said. "Using the paygate option, Sony are able to set the price for the film and release it widely without implicating anyone or exposing any third party to a terrorist threat."
BitTorrent also cautioned Sony against making the film available through piracy websites, as some have suggested. "That would only serve to encourage bad actors," BitTorrent said. "It's also important to make the distinction that these piracy sites are not 'torrent sites.' They are piracy sites that are wrongfully exploiting torrent technology."
Other creators who have released content through BitTorrent include Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who charged fan $6 to download his album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes through the service.
