‘The Missing’ Gets Second Season Order From Starz
Starz is going the “True Detective” route with “The Missing.”
The much-praised miniseries chiller about the disappearance of a 5-year-old boy has been ordered for an eight-episode second season that will follow a new missing-persons case. A co-production with the BBC, “Missing” is in the midst of its run on Starz and last week earned a Golden Globe nom for miniseries and an acting nom for star Frances O’Connor.
Brothers Harry and Jack Williams will again write the eight episodes of season two.
“The remarkably talented Williams brothers crafted a beautifully complex and heart wrenching story with ‘The Missing’ and while the story, character and locations will be different in this new iteration, we anticipate the same captivating long-form storytelling and character development that critics and viewers have responded so well to,” said Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik.
Limited series done in season-long anthology formats are the rage in cable dramas right now thanks to the success of HBO’s “Detective,” FX’s “Fargo” and “American Horror Story.” FX aims to launch a true-crime narrative franchise under the “American Crime Story” banner next year, starting with a look at the O.J. Simpson murder saga.
The second season of “Missing” will be an entirely new case but it’s unclear if any characters from season one might return.
“Missing” is shepherded by the BBC, New Pictures and Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment. Willow Grylls, Charlie Pattinson and Elaine Pyke are exec producers for New Pictures; Harry and Jack Williams for Two Brothers Pictures; Polly Hill for the BBC and Callender for Playground Entertainment.
