Artsploitation Sees North American Distrib Life for ‘Death in Buenos Aires’
BUENOS AIRES – In a deal sealed at Ventana Sur, Raymond Murray’s Artsploitation Films has acquired from Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Ent. North American rights to Natalia Meta’s feature debut, thriller “Death in Buenos Aires.”
Artsploitation plans a theatrical release in the spring of 2015, with a DVD and VOD release in the fall.
Produced by Veronica Cura, whose credits also include Cannes Camera d’Or winner “Las Acacias,” and released in Argentina by Bernardo and Paula Zupnik’s Distribution Co, “Death” over-indexed on home territory, punching $2.4 million from a May 15 release. That B.O. trawl currently ranks as the fifth highest gross for an Argentine title this year.
“Death” stars Mexican Academy Award nominee Demien Bichir (“A Better Life”), who plays a hardened detective teamed with a cocky rocky cop (played by Chino Darin, the son of Ricardo Darin), to solve the murder of a member of Argentina’s moneyed classes.
Inspired by a string of killings in Buenos Aires’ rich Recoleta district and by Meta’s seeing “Brokeback Mountain,” “Death” proved a buzz title and one of the more mainstream offerings at last year’s Ventana Sur, prompting a pickup by Film Factory.
Artsploitation president Murray and Film Factory’s managing director Vicente Canales negotiated the North American deal.
“’Death in Buenos Aires’ is an invigorating, controversial thriller that will keep audiences enthralled to the last shot. Demian Bichir is brilliant as a police inspector who is challenged professionally and sexually during the course of his investigation,” said Murray.
“We are excited with the opportunity to release the film in the United States and hope it will be received as enthusiastically as it has been in Argentina.”
Canales noted: “Natalia Meta makes an impressive debut in a film that features excellent cinematography of a dazzling Buenos Aires.”
