FilmSharks Boards ‘Francisco,’ with Dario Grandinetti
BUENOS AIRES – One of Argentina’s most revered actors, Dario Grandinetti (“Wild Tales,” “Talk to Her”), will play Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, who anointed Pope Francis in March of last year, in “Francisco,” an awaited vision of the pope originated in his native Argentina.
Disney distributes in Argentina, the rest of Latin America and Spain. Buenos Aires-based Pablo Bossi, one of Argentina’s best-known producers (“Nine Queens,” “The Games Maker,” “Son of the Bride,” “Chinese Takeaway”), is producing. Another Argentine vet, Beda Docampo Feijoo (“Camila,” “Los amores de Kafka,” “El marido perfecto”), has written and will direct “Francisco,” which goes into production Jan. 12 in Buenos Aires. The nine-week shoot then segues to locations in Madrid and Rome. “Francisco’s” world premiere is set for July 2015.
FilmSharks Intl. is bringing “Francisco” onto the international market at Ventana Sur, which kicked off Monday in Buenos Aires.
Silvia Abascal (“El Lobo”), Jorge Marrale (“Cordero de Dios”), Carlos Hipolito (“Ninette”), Leonor Manso (“Topos”), Laura Novoa (“Lanube”) and Leticia Bredice (“Nine Queens”) co-star in an Argentina-Spain co-production between Bossi and Spain’s Gloriamundi.
A fiction feature, “Francisco” is based on “Francisco: Life and Revolution,” by Elisabetta Pique, Vatican correspondent for Argentina’s La Nacion.
Written by Docampo Feijoo as well, “Francisco” follows a Spanish journalist (Abascal) as she researches how Bergoglio, a Jesuit priest and son of Italian immigrants whom she got to know in the Conclave of 2005, walked his long journey from the discovery of his calling as an adolescent to his being elected pope. “Francisco” will also describe his work in the slums, and battle against prostitution, slave labor, the drug trade and corruption.
“Francisco” will also illuminate Francisco’s not-so-well-known struggle with Argentina’s military dictatorship, a press statement said Wednesday.
“The relationship between the journalist and Father Jorge is tinged with the warmth, good humor and wisdom with which the future pope will astonish the faithful,” the press statement said.
“We hope that this film transmits the admiration which we all feel for the coherence of a life based in austerity and charity really inspires,” Docampo Feijoo said.
Key craft includes cinematographer Kiko de la Rica (“Blancanieves,” “Witching & Bitching”), Jose Quetglas (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) for makeup and composer Federico Jusid (“The Secret in Their Eyes”).
