She was 32. Brown gained fame as a contender on MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge.” She had already survived a bout with cancer at the age of 23, shortly before she first appeared on the MTV series. In 2012, after she’d returned for another season of “Road Rules Challenge,” she disclosed that the cancer had returned in her colon and stomach. Brown began chronicling her treatment, including her struggles with health insurance issues, for People.com, which made her a high-profile advocate for treatment and the importance of early detection efforts for women. “It’s important to me to share the ‘realness’ of my journey,” Brown wrote in September. “It’s okay to admit that at times it’s hard, that it can be tough.” In a statement, MTV hailed Brown’s spirit. “Diem was a true fighter and brought passion to everything she touched. We will miss her,” the cabler said.
