Dick Schaal, Who Appeared on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ Dies at 86
Character actor Richard “Dick” Schaal, who appeared on numerous TV shows including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Bob Newhart Show,” died Tuesday at the Motion Picture and Television Fund home in Woodland Hills. He was 86.
Schaal was a familiar face on sitcoms of the 1960s and ’70s including “Mary Tyler Moore Show” spinoffs “Rhoda” and “Phyllis.” He guest starred on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “That Girl,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Love, American Style” as well as dramas such as “The Rockford Files.” Working into the 1980s, he had recurring roles on “Trapper John” and “Just Our Luck.”
Schaal, who was born in Chicago, joined the Second City comedy troupe in 1962. He was known at Second City for his command of physical comedy, mime and improvisation. After starting out in the construction business, he started a comedy improv company and was soon hired for Second City’s second revue.
Moving to New York, he worked in improvisational theater and met Valerie Harper, who became his second wife.
He also appeared in films including “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming,” “Slaughterhouse-Five” and “Steelyard Blues.”
Schaal was married three times and was divorced from Harper in 1978. His daughter, actress Wendy Schaal, from his marriage to Lois Treacy, survives him.
