AFM: Walt Disney Latin America Snaps Up ‘Torrente 5′
The Walt Disney Co. Latin America has taken all Latin American rights to Santiago Segura’s “Torrente, Mission: Eurovegas,” the fifth installment of Segura’s blockbuster sleazebag cop saga. Sony released the pic Oct. 3 in Spain to a first weekend gross of $4.65 million — the biggest first-frame B.O. for any release in Spain this year, Hollywood pics included.
“Torrente 5” has grossed $13 million through Nov. 2.
Disney will open “Torrente 5” in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile on Nov. 6.
“Torrente 5” is sold by FilmSharks Intl., with FilmSharks topper Guido Rud having just sold it to Dexin Film for former Yugoslavia.
Co-starring a Spanish-speaking Alec Baldwin, pic was written, directed and stars Segura.
Since the first film bowed in 1998, Segura’s “Torrente” saga has grossed a cumulative €70.6 million ($95.2 million) in Spain, become a cult item — Oliver Stone and Guillermo del Toro have both had cameos in installments — and broken out to theatrical openings and franchise deals abroad.
The newest buyers, all for the first four “Torrente” movies, include Smile Films (Scandinavia), HBO Central Europe (pay TV and SVOD rights), Netflix (Latin America) and Star Entertainment India. Sales to the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Germany and Mexico are now under negotiation, said Rud. Indian, Italian and German remake rights are under also under discussion, he added.
“We are finding buyers worldwide loving the ‘Torrente’ saga and marketing it as ‘Borat’ meets ‘James Bond,’ and having Alec Baldwin on board opens it up even more,” said Rud.
Music Box’s Doppelganger Releasing rolled out the first four “Torrente” films on VOD in the U.S. last December.
