AFM: Freestyle Sets ‘Zombeavers’ Release Date
The zombie beavers are heading to U.S. theaters and VOD on March 20.
In an early deal at the American Film Market, Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media have acquired theatrical and VOD rights to “Zombeavers,” which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival. The trailer for the horror-comedy has received more than 3.6 million views on YouTube.
“Freestyle is happy to pick up this social-media phenomenon with a very large built-in audience,” said Mark Borde, co-president of Freestyle Releasing.
“Zombeavers” was directed by Jordan Rubin from a script he wrote with Jon and Al Kaplan. “This may very well be the most important film you will ever see about zombie beavers,” Rubin said.
The film stars Rachel Melvin, Cortney Palm and Lexi Atkins as college girls on a carefree vacation of drinking games, topless sunbathing and sexual exploration. Their frolicking comes to an abrupt end when toxic zombie beavers try to eat them.
Jake Weary, Peter Gilroy and Hutch Dano also star. Producers are Evan Astrowsky, Chris Lemole, Tim Zajaros, Jake Weiner, JC Spink and Chris Bender.
“Zombeavers” screened at Sitges, London Screamfest, the Tribeca Film Festival and the Fantasia Intl. Film Festival.
Freestyle’s biggest hit came earlier this year with the faith-based drama “God’s Not Dead,” which grossed $60 million.
The deal was negotiated by Chris Charalambous for Freestyle Digital Media with Ryan Pastorek and Lawrence Kopeikin of Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner & Gellman on behalf of the film.
