FALL RIVER —
StillPoint and the armies of Pokemon are hoping for a little help from their friends.
StillPoint Comics, 120 S. Main St., is running an Internet funding campaign, hoping to raise $5,000 to keep the downtown store open.
The store was closed for 10 days this month when it lost power.
“We need a little help covering expenses for the events we offer,” said company president Kevin Hudson. “We have a GoFundMe campaign underway.
“We have $5,000 as a goal. We are up to $2,000. Local people and friends from around the country are stepping up to help.”
The business is someplace between a store and a meeting place for the comics crowd.
“We have comic books for sale here along with board games and role games,” Hudson said.
Miniatures and game cards are also for sale, and in use on most days.
With merchandise at the front of the store, the back of the store is dedicated to long tables where games are played into the night.
Players build their own decks by buying cards — similar to buying baseball cards — and then entering games with the deck.
Pokemon, Cardfight Vanguard, Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic The Gathering are some of the games that can be found underway at the store on most days. Each has its own set of rules, strategy and tactics.
There are also several board games with pieces for sale and boards for play.
“We have a lot of people come in to play after work and after school,” Hudson said. “A lot of our customers don’t have a lot of money to spend, but they are regulars coming in to play. We try to run a number of events for them.
“With our events and programs, we need a little help.”
Contributors can go to www.GoFundMe.com and type “StillPoint Comics” in the search bar. Look for the heading “Save Your StillPoint.” You can learn more about the shop on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/stillpointcomics.
In the meantime, the store continues as it has since it opened in 1997, Hudson said.
“We have a Halloween party on Saturday,” he said. “The party is open to the community. It is totally free and everyone is welcome.”
The party starts at 6 p.m. It will include free comics and games, a costume contest and music by the band Blacken the Sun.
“We are going on,” Hudson said. “As far as we know, we are here. We are still struggling.
“We want to stick around. We’ll do our best.”
