Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Cake’ Set for Oscar-Qualifying Release via Cinelou’s New Label
Cinelou Films producers Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon are launching Cinelou Releasing – starting with an awards-season release of Jennifer Aniston’s dark comedy “Cake.”
The new label will open “Cake” for a one-week qualifying run in December, followed by a wide release in January.
Cinelou Releasing plans to open up to four films over the next year and has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures to handle international distribution for six Cinelou releases over the next three years.
Aniston came on board “Cake” at Berlin for Cinelou, which financed and produced under its $100 million financing pact with Taiwan-based Shenghua Entertainment.
“Having a US distribution arm was always part of our strategy to be in control of the creative, marketing and financial results of our films,” Solomon said. “We were very pleased with how ‘Cake’ turned out and are excited about all the opportunities the film presents on multiple levels.”
“Cake” premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. Variety’s Justin Chang gave the film a mixed review, calling it “darkly amusing but overly calculated.”
Daniel Barnz directed the Black List script by Patrick Tobin. Aniston stars as an acerbic woman who becomes fascinated by the suicide of another woman in her chronic pain support group. As she uncovers the details of the suicide, she also grapples with her own personal tragedy.
Producers are Solomon, Canton, Kristin Hahn and Ben Barnz.
