CNN, Radius Partner On Film About College Sex Abuse
Radius, a division of the Weinstein Co., and CNN Films have partnered to produce a film about campus sex crime, the two parties announced Monday. Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Kirby Dick and Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning producer Amy Ziering will direct and produce the film. Radius will distribute the film theatrically and CNN/U.S. has acquired the broadcast rights.
The film, currently untitled, is expected to be ready for theaters in 2015 and will appear as a CNN Films broadcast for the network later in 2015.
The feature will follow the personal struggles of several people working to deal with their own trauma. Several survivors will come forward with their storied, and the filmmakers wil point out the institutional similarities between a collegiate environment where reporting of assault is often discouraged and that of the U.S. Military, which has struggled with its own crisis in sexual assaults. With the rising outrage in the wake of recent nationally publicized scandals associated with college and professional athletes accused of violent and sexual crimes, the filmmakers will describe a near ‘tipping point’ in the way that such events are viewed.
“The statistics are staggering – our country has a moral obligation to address this issue. We hope our film will provide a wake-up call to our nation to better protect our students,” said director Dick in a prepared statement.
“This type of important but sensitive material requires skilled handling by exceptional filmmakers,” said Vinnie Malhotra, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide, “Kirby and Amy are the perfect team to take on this challenge, as a natural follow up to their Academy Award-nominated and critically acclaimed film, ‘The Invisible War.’”
The co-production deal between RADiUS and CNN Films was negotiated by Radius co-presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego alongside Malhotra and Stacey Wolf for CNN, and Marc H. Simon of Cowan DeBaets Abrahams & Sheppard LLP and Dan Cogan of Impact Partners on behalf of the filmmakers.
