Lionsgate, Tribeca Team For Subscription VOD Launch
I am now being told this service will focus on being a branded platform for prestige independent films from around the world, and a lot of attention will be paid toward getting Geoff Gilmore and leading filmmakers to introduce each title, talking about why they were selected, and why they are important. Among those Lionsgate films in the library include Monster’s Ball, Crash, to The Hurt Locker and Red Violin, Arbitrage and Margin Call. These films aren’t locked, but they fit the template.
EARLIER, 6 AM PST: Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises are the latest to create a subscription VOD service for their movie content. The two companies say they are teaming on Tribeca Short List, a service that will launch next year. The announcement does not indicate if this will include top Lionsgate library titles like The Hunger Games and Twilight Saga, or the Meet The Parents series Tribeca produced for Universal and DreamWorks, or how much it will ask consumers to pay. These factors will determine how important this is in the wake of HBO and CBS making its programming available to non-cable subscribers through direct subscription, a segment of the business that to date has been dominated by Netflix.
CinemaCon 2013 - Day 4Tribeca also runs the Tribeca Film Festival, and presumably some of those films that don’t warrant wide theatrical release could find a home on such a service, though they would not be the studio-caliber star-studded productions that normally make consumers reach into their pockets to pay a monthly fee. An insider tells me the menu here won’t be obscure films but that all these details are still being worked out.

Wasn't Tribeca purchased by MSG...no deal from Cablevision? Or money to launch a truly independent curated subscription...
What they are saying is that the service “will encompass a prestigious selection of Lionsgate and Tribeca titles as well as critically-acclaimed films drawn from around the world. The films will be curated by Tribeca and leading voices in contemporary culture and refreshed on a weekly basis. The service is slated to launch in the first half of calendar 2015.”
Said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer: “The launch of the Tribeca Short List service unites two powerful brands and underscores our commitment to collaborate with blue-chip partners around the world to deliver premium content to online audiences. The Tribeca name resonates with movie aficionados everywhere, and our service will encompass a highly curated, diverse and prestigious portfolio of quality films.”
Said Tribeca Enterprises CEO Jane Rosenthal: “We are pleased to join with Lionsgate, a world-class brand synonymous with innovation and exciting, quality entertainment, to create a highly curated experience that disrupts the ‘more-is-more’ model in today’s streaming on-demand landscape. “Tribeca Short List aims to be a service where you can see films you never got to watch, forgot to watch, and want to watch.”
The companies say they’ll base the new service in New York with a general manager and that Lionsgate and Tribeca execs will be comprised of execs from both companies. They’ll have an Advisory Board as well, one they say “encompasses some of the leading names in American entertainment and culture.”
