'Mystery Science Theater 3000′ Stars Reunite in Cast of Yahoo Series ‘Other Space’
The stars of the cult TV classic “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ are having a reunion of sorts.
Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu have joined the cast of “Other Space,” a half-hour comedy created by Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”) for Yahoo. The series just began production in anticipation of a launch in the spring of next year.
Launched in 1988, the series first ran locally in Minneapolis. “MST3K” then ran on Comedy Central for six seasons, followed by a three-season run on Syfy (then known as Sci-Fi Channel) before going off the air in 1999. The show’s human host, played by Hodgson, and robot pals (including the original voiced by Beaulieu) poke fun at awful sci-fi flicks of yesteryear.
“I’m thrilled to be cast with my old buddy Trace Beaulieu in the new comedy sci-fi series ‘Other Space,” said Hodgson. “I also think fans of ‘MST3K’ will be very interested in this new work that mastermind Paul Feig and his cast and crew have cooked up for Yahoo.”
No specifics yet on their characters, though Bealieu will voice a robot character like he did on “MST3K.”
In addition to the “MST3K” guys, Yahoo revealed the cast of Space” including Karan Soni (“Betas”), Eugene Cordero (“House of Lies”), Milana Vayntrub (“Silicon Valley”), Conor Leslie (“Klondike”), Neil Casey (“Broad City”) and Bess Rous (“Murder in the First”). Feig turned to longtime collaborator Allison Jones to put the cast together.
Yahoo describes “Space” as “a journey in unknown space set in the early 22nd century, when the human race has mapped most of the known universe, failed to find alien life, and frankly gotten a little tired of the whole thing.”
Joining Feig as executive producer on “Space” is Owen Ellickson, whose credits include serving as a producer on NBC’s “The Office.” Feig wrote the pilot and will direct the finale.
Also directing episodes of “Space” are Luke Matheny (“God of Love”), Lucia Aniello (“Broad City”), Rob Cohen (“Big Bang Theory”), The Nix Brothers (“The Grawlix”), and Matt Sohn (“New Girl”).
“MST3K” is in revival mode. Last month, Vimeo made available a collection of 80 episodes via a pact with Shout! Factory that gives the online-video service has exclusive rights to any newly cleared episodes launching over the next year.
Earlier this month Yahoo revealed the cast of its other eight-episode series “Sin City Saints,” scheduled for release as part of a slate of originals that will include the return of the NBC series “Community.” “Saints” will star Andrew Santino and Malin Akerman.
