variety.com/2014/film/news/shawn-levy-leaves-warner-bros-minecraft-film-exclusive-1201374902/Shawn Levy Leaves Warner Bros.’ ‘Minecraft’ Film After working together to develop a take on the film adaptation of the video game “Minecraft,” director Shawn Levy and writers Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney have decided to leave the Warner Bros. project. The three had been brought on to develop the film with Levy eyeing to direct. Levy and the Mulroney’s presented the new idea to the studio last month but it didn’t mesh with what the video game developers were looking for. Levy and the studio felt it was the best idea that the two move on and look in another direction. The studio still views this as a very important property and hopes to land a new director by the start of the new year. As for Levy, the director has not decided what his next project will be but sources say he is deciding between “40 Thieves,” a retelling of the “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” tale for Fox, a “Tinkerbell” reimagining with Melissa McCarthy attached to star and “The City That Sailed” with Will Smith on board to star. Levy begins promoting his next movie “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” tomorrow in New York and will continue doing that for the next month, so it is not likely that his next film will be set in stone until the new year. Warner Bros. acquired the rights to “Minecraft” in February with Roy Lee producing along with Jill Messick. The concept of the game allows players to create their own avatar, and they are dropped into a world filled with nocturnal monsters. Levy, who is repped by WME, has “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” slated to bow on Dec. 19 and also helmed “This is Where I Leave You” for Warner Bros. earlier this year.
