Radar Pictures Gears Up ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ with Roger Donaldson
Roger Donaldson (“The November Man”) has come on to direct an adaptation of the iconic World War I novel “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
Donaldson will direct from a script by Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson, who are producing with Radar Pictures’ Ted Field, Mike Weber and Michael Napoliello. The project is set to start shooting in March in Europe.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” is based on the 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, who was a German veteran of World War I and described the immense stress on soldiers during the conflict. The 1930 film won Oscars for Best Picture and director Lewis Milestone.
The project reunites Field and Donaldson after more than two decades since they teamed on 1988’s “Cocktail.” Donaldson’s other credits include “Thirteen Days,” “The Recruit” and “The Bank Job.”
Donaldson has a personal connection to the material as both of his grandparents fought in Word War I, which began a century ago in 1914.
Stokell and Paterson optioned and developed “All Quiet” through their company Sliding Down Rainbows Entertainment before partnering with Radar. Stokell spent a decade as a journalist with The Washington Post organization and Paterson starred in over 15 independent films.
Their main goal in developing “All Quiet” has been to capture the gritty realism and unforgiving nature of trench warfare.
Radar produced “The Last Samurai” and is in post-production on the thriller “Under the Bed.” The company is starting pre-production on “Kickboxer,” a remake of the 1989 Jean-Claude van Damme actioner.
