Deal calls for the companies to co-develop and co-finance two projects per year. Both companies are focused on projects with international appeal that can command straight-to-series orders from U.S. networks. Slingshot is the startup production venture headed by former FremantleMedia topper Ellender (pictured left). EuropaCorp, the Paris-based studio headed by filmmaker Luc Besson, has revved up its U.S.-focused TV activity with the appointment in May of veteran drama producer Matthew Gross (pictured right) as prexy of EuropaCorp Television Studios U.S. “The Slingshot Global Media-EuropaCorp Television Studios alliance creates a ‘whole is greater than the sum of its parts’ scenario,” said Gross. “By joining forces it strengthens our financing and distribution abilities with the straight-to-series model.” Ellender launched Los Angeles-based Slingshot in February with backing from private equity fund TPG Growth. The company is fielding development projects with Keanu Reeves, Blumhouse Prods. and other partners. Slingshot also recently inked a first-look pact with El Jefe, a TV incubator headed by novelists/screenwriters Brian McGreevy, Lee Shipman and Philipp Meyer. “By joining forces with EuropaCorp Television Studios, we will be able to create globally appealing television by combining our assets,” Ellender said.
