Disney XD’s new “Star Wars Rebels” series has started off strong with TV movie “Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion” attracting 6.5 million viewers worldwide during its premieres on the kids cabler and Disney Channel.
The film is the first new “Star Wars” project to launch since Disney acquired Lucasfilm.
“Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion” aired first on Disney Channel in the U.S. on Oct. 3, attracting 2.7 million total viewers and 1.3 million kids age 2-11, 918,000 kids age 6-11, 762,000 boys 2-11, and 527,000 boys in the 6-11 demo.
Among the target demo of boys 6-11, the animated film performed 52% higher than Disney Channel’s year-to-date ratings average in the timeslot.
Disney XD’s U.S. channel airs the film Oct. 6, before running the weekly “Star Wars Rebels” series Oct. 13.
“Spark of Rebellion” also aired in 163 countries on Disney Channels and Disney XD on Friday.
It was watched by 3.8 million viewers in 16 markets across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Canada, of which 1.8 million were kids and 1.1 million were boys.
It also was distributed early across Disney’s WATCH apps, available on mobile platforms, where it generated more than 75,000 video views since Sept. 26. and on Disney Channel’s subscription based VOD offerings on Comcast’s Xfinity and on Apple iTunes, where it currently ranks as the top TV property.
The TV movie, which introduces new characters that will be front-and-center in “Rebels,” was screened at San Diego Comic-Con, in July, and is set between the events of “Star Wars Episodes III and IV,” with its look influenced by the work of original “Star Wars” concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. Dave Filoni (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) created “Rebels” with Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”) and Carrie Beck.
The voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr., Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar, Taylor Gray, David Oyelowo and Jason Isaacs.
