Italian horror director Dario Argento has launched a crowdfunding campaign for his latest film “The Sandman” with Iggy Pop starring.
The Canadian-German production, led by producers Daniela Tully, Jeff Rogers and Rob Heydon, is looking to raise $250,000 via the Indiegogo site.
David Tully wrote the script, a contemporary thriller set in the 21st century with primal roots stemming from the dark forests of Germany with Pop portraying a serial killer. The film will also include references to Argento’s horror films such as “Suspira” and “Deep Red.”
Producers are offering rewards such as personal messages from Argento and Pop, set tours and a role as a black-gloved killer in the film.
“I was thrilled to read the script, because I recognized right away, this one was written for me,” Argento said. “I’m so excited that for the first time in my career, I will be able to involve my fans so early in the process and have them play an integral role in my next film. Also, working with Iggy Pop is amazing!”
Pop said he has been a longtime fan of Argento’s works, which he called “compellingly strange, beautiful, and full of relentless terror.”
“If I could play the Sandman for him it would make my life complete,” he added. “I hope I have not just written my own epitaph.”
Claudio Simonetti, Argento’s longtime musical collaborator, will write the score and Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts have recorded the song “Way She Moves” as the film’s title song.
Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci wrote for Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in the West.” Argento also directed “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” before starting his career in thrillers and horror.
Shivertown Road Films and Daniela Tully are repped by attorney Clifford Lo.
