Cartoon Network, Liquid Comics and CA Media’s Graphic India, and POW! Entertainment have teamed to bring Stan Lee‘s first-ever Indian superhero to television. Chakra: The Invincible will debut in an hour-long TV movie on Cartoon Network across South Asia on November 30th, reaching a potential 34M households. Chakra had previously been talked about in its development stage and Lee now calls the film a “thrill-a-minute superhero saga.” It centers on Raju Rai, a young Indian boy in Mumbai who, along with his mentor, Dr. Singh, develops a suit that activates the mystical chakras of the body. When Raju dons the suit, he discovers superpowers and vows to use them to protect and to serve. His first order of business is to save the city, and the world, from super villains.
But Chakra: The Invincible isn’t staying put in South Asia. It will also be featured on Angry Birds creator Rovio Entertainment’s new ToonsTV platform. The deal gives Chakra the possibility of hitting a wider global audience, a cross-over opportunity for an entertainment industry that’s increasingly spreading its wings. Graphic India also has plans to launch the character in a series of digital and print comic books and graphic novels.
Graphic India co-founder and CEO, Sharad Devarajan, directed and exec produced the animated film. Jeevan J. Kang, SVP Creative at Graphic India, oversaw the visual development and created the character designs and art for the project working closely with Lee and Devarajan.
Earlier this year, CA Media, LP, the Asian investment arm of The Chernin Group, acquired a large minority stake in Graphic India which is also owned by Liquid Comics. The company is focused on creating mythological and superhero characters, comics and stories for the Indian youth market, published across mobile and online platforms. They’re well-known for publishing comics that feature Krrish, the superhero played by Hrithik Roshan in the blockbuster film franchise. The company also has feature projects in development in Hollywood including Ramayan 3392A.D., The Leaves and The Sadhu.
