TiVo has unleashed the 18-wheeler of digital video recorders.
The DVR company is introducing the TiVo Mega, configured with an almost ridiculous 24 terabytes of total storage capacity. That’s enough to hold up to 4,000 hours of HD programming — amounting to more than five months — or up to 24,000 of standard-def TV, which adds up to nearly three years.
The Mega offers six times the recording space of TiVo’s previously biggest DVR model, the Roamio Pro, which has 3 TB built in plus an optional 1 TB expandable. Like the Roamio, the Mega includes six tuners to record up to six channels simultaneously; whole-home capabilities; and built-in transcoding to stream live or recorded content to smartphones and tablets anywhere.
But what kind of TV junkie needs to salt away years of stuff from the tube? TiVo pointed out that one of the routine complaints of DVR users is that they typically have to constantly prune old recordings to make space for new ones. The Mega is designed to alleviate that (first world) problem.
“People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone,” noted TiVo marketing chief Ira Bahr.
And, while the Mega is targeted at high-end consumers, the system could have crossover appeal within certain niches of the TV biz among pros who need to monitor multiple programs on an ongoing basis.
The Mega is expected to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2015, to be available through home-theater specialty retailers. The rack-mountable system is built like a data-center server, not a box that can fit under your TV. The expected $5,000 price tag will include product lifetime service, according to TiVo.
