Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced June 2, 2015 as the release date for “Batman: Arkham Knight.”
The massive open-world game originally had been set to be released this fall, but Warner Bros. wanted to give developer Rocksteady more time to finish the company’s final installment in its trilogy, which also includes the hits “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and “Batman: Arkham City.”
This year marks Batman’s 75th anniversary.
However, the date shift will also move “Batman” away from other big tentpole releases like this month’s “Destiny,” from Activision Blizzard, as well as the next installment of the “Call of Duty,” and “Assassin’s Creed” franchises.
A new Lego Batman game — “Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham” — will still debut this fall.
Warner Bros. made the announcement via the game’s Twitter feed.
“Arkham City” bowed in 2011, with “Arkham Asylum” starting the franchise in 2009.
“Arkham Knight” will take place a year after that game, with Batman facing off against villains the Scarecrow, Two Face, the Riddler, and Harley Quinn and enabling players to race around Gotham City in the Batmobile, which was only seen under construction in previous titles.
The games have been a darker take on the Caped Crusader, targeting older gamers, as the more colorful and cartoony Lego Batman franchise is meant to appeal more to families and kids.
As Rocksteady developed “Arkham City,” Warner Bros. released “Batman: Arkham Origins,” as a prequel to “Arkham Asylum” last year, featuring a younger Bruce Wayne starting out as Batman.
“Arkham Knight” will be available on Sony’s PlayStation 4, Microsfot’s Xbox One and PC.
Two collectors editions also will be released:
The “Batman: Arkham Knight Limited Edition” (priced at $99) will include an 80-page custom art book showcasing the concept art from the game, a steelbook case with the game, a DC Comics “Batman: Arkham Knight #0″ comicbook, exclusive character skins and a Batman memorial statue.
A $200 “Batman: Arkham Knight Batmobile Edition” will replace the Batman memorial statue with a transforming Batmobile statue.
