variety.com/2014/film/news/hbo-docs-us-rights-nick-broomfield-grim-sleeper-1201302707/ HBO Documentary Films has acquired U.S. rights to veteran director Nick Broomfield’s “Tales of the Grim Sleeper,” in advance of the doc’s international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 10. The deal was negotiated by Submarine’s Josh Braun and David Koh on behalf of U.K. caster Sky Atlantic, which originally commissioned the film. In Variety’s review at the Telluride Film Festival, chief film critic Scott Foundas called the doc “Broomfield’s sharpest, most substantial work in at least a decade.” “Grim” is an account of alleged serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr., who was is suspected of murdering at least 10 women in South Central L.A. between 1985 and his arrest in 2010. The film was produced by Marc Hoeferlin in association with British Sky Broadcasting, which is handling international sales. Celia Taylor serves as executive producer. The deal marks Broomfield’s fifth HBO doc, following “Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, “Kurt & Courtney,” “Fetishes” and “Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam.” “Grim” screens three times in Toronto, and is on the New York Festival’s main slate. The film will debut on HBO in 2015.
