As noted, Jay Briscoe defeated Michael Elgin to become the new ROH Champion this past weekend. Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the decision to take the title off Elgin was made last minute. Elgin was going to retain the title this weekend and then lose it at Final Battle. Ring of Honor officials were reportedly "furious" over Elgin's comments in a recent interview about wanting to participate in a tryout for Major League Baseball next year. Ring of Honor then "lucked out" with the title change as Elgin was stopped at the Canadian border this weekend and is not allowed into the United States for 90 days due to work visa issues. Meltzer adds that the work visa issues had nothing to do with him losing the title.
Elgin tweeted the following this weekend after reports came out:
"I'm going to make something clear. I wasn't giving up to play baseball. I wanted to prove to myself I could do it. Trying out doesn't hurt"
"Anything at all, @ringofhonor did not tell me there was an issue with wanted to try something. Wrestle still has my full attention and love"
"I wanted to prove to myself I could do something. There has been issues but oh well. @ringofhonor is being helpful and are great ppl."
"I love wrestling but wanted to test myself outside of wrestling. Don't talk unless you know everything."
"I'm saying is ROH didn't say there was an issue becusse there wasn't. I'm saying @ringofhonor has been great to me and is in this situation"

In an update about Michael Elgin dropping the ROH World Championship this past Saturday, it was said to be a situation that has been brewing for a little while. ROH apparently was not happy with Elgin doing jobs on independent shows while being ROH champion, specifically to Trevor Lee at a PWG show last month. Elgin recently blew up at the front office for feeling like he was being treated like a second class citizen. Reports that Elgin got heat over an interview where he expressed interest in trying his hand at professional baseball appear to be incorrect. Elgin was informed that he would be dropping the title during a meeting on the afternoon of the show. Elgin was said to be very upset, and kept to himself after meeting. Jay Briscoe was reportedly shocked when he was told that he would be winning the belt since that was not the original plan.
There is said to be a lot of heat within the locker room with management because of the lack of communication in ROH. ROH was believed to be dealing with Elgin's work visa, and Elgin and his wife were detained at the U.S. - Canada border after the show because Elgin's visa had expired. Elgin is in the process of moving to the U.S. and is waiting for his green card. ROH flew Elgin's wife back to the U.S. while Elgin is staying with family in Toronto. There are those that believe that ROH should have stayed on top of Elgin's work visa and gotten it handled.
