variety.com/2014/news/quentin-tarantinos-hateful-eight-set-weinstein-1201296717/Film Reporter Dave McNary Film Reporter @variety_DMcNary The Weinstein Company is re-teaming with Quentin Tarantino on his upcoming Western “The Hateful Eight” with shooting starting in January and a release set for the fall of 2015. The announcement is not a surprise, given that all of Tarantino’s films have been distributed by Bob and Harvey Weinstein, first through Miramax with “Reservoir Dogs” and then through TWC. The post-Civil War actioner will be shot on 65mm film and have the widest 70mm film release in over 20 years with the initial release in 70mm, followed by releases in 35mm and DCP formats. Richard Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh will produce the film and the executive producers are Bob and Harvey Weinstein along with G. Mac Brown. “We are incredibly excited to begin production on ‘The Hateful Eight,’ as we know this picture will be as innovative, brash and of course fun as all Quentin projects prior,” Bob and Harvey Weinstein said. “There is, quite simply, no other filmmaker like him, and we are as proud as ever to continue this partnership that started over twenty years ago.” A teaser trailer for the film was attached to last month’s release of Robert Rodriguez’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.” That trailer consisted of concept art. The project has a colorful history. The screenplay to “The Hateful Eight” was leaked online early this year with Gawker posting a story pointing to the draft, leading to a suit by Tarantino against the media outlet (which was later dismissed, then refiled, then withdrawn) and the declaration that the Western would not be his next film. In April, however, he announced to a crowd at a Los Angeles reading of the “Hateful Eight” script that he was working on a second draft. At the event, the director introduced in order of appearance “the Tarantino Superstars,” all alums of his previous films: Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, James Parks as the driver O.B., Kurt Russell as bounty hunter John Ruth also known as “The Hangman,” Amber Tamblyn as his prisoner Daisy Domergue, Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix, Denis Menochet as the Frenchman Bob, Tim Roth as the Englishman Oswaldo Mobray, Michael Madsen as John Gage, Bruce Dern as Confederate General Smithers, Dana Gourrier as Minnie, Zoe Bell as Six Horse Judy and James Remar as Jody. The story is set in Wyoming and focuses on people trapped after a snow storm forces a stagecoach off its route. Tarantino confirmed in July at Comic-Con that “The Hateful Eight” would be his next project. He shot “Django Unchained” in 2012.

Bichir is one of the eight in the “Bob” role. (Bob was played by Denis Menochet in Tarantino’s live read of the script in April.) Tatum’s role was not disclosed. The other seven roles in the post-Civil War western: Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, Kurt Russell as John “The Hangman” Ruth, Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue, Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix, Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray, Michael Madsen as Joe Gage and Bruce Dern as General Sanford Smithers. Leigh, Bichir and Tatum will be working for the first time with Tarantino. It’s his eighth feature and the follow-up to “Django Unchained,” which grossed over $425 million worldwide. The story is set on a wintry Wyoming landscape as a storm overtakes a stagecoach on a mountainside stopover. Producers are long-time Tarantino collaborators Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and G. Mac Brown are the executive producers, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producers. TWC will release the film, presented in 70mm, next year. “Any actor who jumps on board with one of Quentin’s films is in for a wild and rewarding ride,” said Bob and Harvey Weinstein. News of Tatum’s casting was first reported by Deadline.com.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/afm-tarantino-going-all-indie-747351AFM: Tarantino Going All Indie for 'Hateful Eight' Only independent distributors will be allowed to bid on the director's latest film, after his last two movies were released by the international arms of Sony and Universal, respectively After sleeping with the studios with Django Unchained and The Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino is getting back to his indie roots with his upcoming film, The Hateful Eight. The Weinstein Company, which is producing the director's upcoming Western, as well as handling world sales at AFM, is only accepting offers from independent distributors for the film. This contrasts with Django Unchained, which Columbia Pictures co-produced and Sony bowed in multiple territories, including Japan, Germany and the U.K., and Inglourious Basterds, which Universal's global arm UIP handled in most of Europe as well as territories such as Australia and Argentina. Buyers reported to The Hollywood Reporter that Tarantino explicitly requested that only indies be allowed to bid on Hateful Eight, which stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Demian Bichir, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. The film will begin shooting in Telluride next month. It is unclear whether Tarantino had issues with the studios' handling of his last two films or if he simply wished to reward the indie distributors who have supported him in the past. Before Inglourious Basterds, all of the director's movies were distributed almost exclusively through independent companies worldwide. It likely helps that Hateful Eight, with a reported budget of $44 million, is substantially cheaper than either Django or Basterds, making it easier for indies to get on board. It certainly seems as if TWC will have no problem selling out the movie. The company is believed to be fielding multiple offers from all major international territories and is expected to sell out the film by this weekend.

New to working with Tarantino on the list are: Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle), Demian Bichir (A Better Life) and Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher). Returning to work with the director again are: Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained), Kurt Russell (Escape From New York), Walton Goggins (Justified), Tim Roth (Lie To Me), Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs) and Bruce Dern (Nebraska). Here’s the official plot synopsis as the movie heads into production for a 2015 release: In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…
