First Photos of Imperial Stormtroopers’ Helmets From ‘Episode VII’?
Streamlined Designs Pay Homage to the Original Trilogy
Photos of what appear to be the sleek new Imperial Stormtroopers helmets from J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII have appeared on the Web. Unlike the original Stormtrooper helmet, the new design is not symmetrical. It has a vent on just one side as well as a black “mouth” opening (under the white nose) that is covered with what appears to be a black mesh of some sort, which probably helps the actors breathe more normally. The black eye lens are set under a protective brow ridge.
Indiewire, which first posted the photos, reports that there are actually several different Stormtrooper helmet designs used in Episode VII including one dubbed “the Jungle Trooper,” which has a flared dome, a long piece in the back of the head that protects the nape of the neck, and a very thin eye slit. This design appears to be an evolution of the ones sported by the Imperial Snowtroopers during the battle on the ice planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
A different photo of the new Stormtrooper helmet appeared on the movie prop replica site The RPF, which lends a little more credence to argument that these really are the designs for the new Stormtrooper helmets, even though Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet officially released the design or confirmed any of these reports .
In fact, if these are the designs, they clearly represent refinements rather than wholesale redesigns of the classic Stormtrooper helmets. By bringing back the cast of the original trilogy, and hopefully, if current rumors hold true, hiring Drew Struzan to create posters for Episode VII, J.J. Abrams continues to demonstrate his reverence for the original Star Wars films, and to inspire hope among the Star Wars faithful that Episode VII will be the film they have been waiting for since the final film in the original trilogy departed theaters.
