“Hung” alum Thomas Jane has been tapped to star in “The Expanse,” a new thriller from Syfy and Alcon TV that’s based on the best-selling book series known for titles like “Leviathan Wakes.”
The 10-hour drama, which is being described as a space opera that is set 200 years in the future, follow’s Jane’s Detective Miller — a native of “the Asteroid Belt” between Mars and Jupiter where he is a dedicated cop for the corporate security force operating as the law in the Belt. He finds a new sense of purpose when he and a rogue ship’s captain lead an investigation into a missing heiress that helps them uncover a great conspiracy.
“Thomas Jane is exactly the type of high caliber actor we hoped this project would attract,” said Bill McGoldrick, Syfy’s exec VP of original content, who made the announcement. “The intelligence and nuance he brings to every performance is perfect for the role of Miller.”
Alcon TV prexy Sharon Hall echoed the statement, saying, “We knew this material would attract highly skilled actors and could not be happier about having Thomas Jane on board.”
“The Expanse” is produced by Alcon Television Group, a division of Alcon Entertainment, and marks the company’s first series order. Executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby wrote the pilot. They will serve as showrunners alongside fellow executive producer Naren Shankar. Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will serve as executive producers with Hall. Alcon Television executive Ben Roberts will serve as co-producer. Ben Cook will serve as producer. Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Co. developed the original pitch, with Fergus and Ostby, and will also executive produce. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who wrote the book series under the pen name James S. A. Corey, will also serve as producers.
Jane is represented by Paradigm and Jamie Afifi at Ziffren Brittenham.
“The Expanse” will premiere in 2015.
