www.deadline.com/2014/07/world-cup-final-germany-beats-argentina-espn-univision/With a goal scored at nearly the end of extra time, Germany has won the 2014 World Cup over Argentina. After a 0–0 score after a regulation 90 minutes, the European side’s Mario Gotze took a pass off his chest, then kicked it past the South Americans in the 112th minute to take the Beautiful Game’s greatest prize before a crowd of 74,738 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and a global audience of probably billions watching on TV (we’ll have ratings as soon as they become available). A last-minute direct kick by Argentina’s Lionel Messi sailed high over the German net that might have evened the score, and sent the game into a shoot out. This is only the sixth time a World Cup final has gone into extra time. The win is German’s fourth World Cup, after victories in 1954, 1974 and 1990 (well, it was West German then, and the win also came over Argentina). Starting on June 13 with 32 teams competing, this year’s tournament has seen record-breaking ratings and viewership results for both of the tournament’s U.S. broadcasters, ESPN and Univision. Both have seen double-digit gains over the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Check back Monday morning for TV ratings results from today’s final from both countries as well the stateside broadcasters. Today’s final was shown on ABC as well as the Spanish language broadcaster.
