PARIS– Adrian Politowski’s Umedia has picked up international sales rights to artist-turned-filmmaker Scott Cohen’s debut “Red Knot.”
The film has just won the of Fipresci Grand Jury prize for best New American Cinema at Seattle fest.
Pic toplines Vincent Kartheiser (“Mad Men”) and Olivia Thirlby (“Juno”) as a young newly married couple from New York who have spending their honeymoon aboard a research vessel bound for Antarctica. An act of betrayal divides the young lovers, driving Chloe to separate herself from Peter, both physically and emotionally.
“As a first feature film, I knew I had to build a stellar team and basically trap them on ship on the roughest sea in the world until we came home with a film,” said Cohen, whose photographic works are in private collections worldwide.”I was interested in exploring a relationship in trouble whilst confined to a place where they could not have personal space to be away from each other. The expansive backdrop of Antarctica proved a perfect contrast to the limited world of the ship.”
“Red Knot” was lensed on location on a research vessel crossing the Southern Ocean and in Antarctica. Umedia is pitching the movie as an “visually stunning, emotionally naturalistic portrait of a young marriage in crisis, set against the icy vastness of Antarctic.”
Michael Simmonds (“The Lunchbox”) Billy Campbell (“The Killing”) also star. Garth Stevenson (“Tracks”) composed the score.
“Scott has created a compelling story with his strong visual style, and the empathy with which he develops his characters,” said Umedia’s Oi Leng Lui. “This film will speak to young audiences everywhere embarking on their own journeys.”
