On UFC Tonight Wednesday, Chael Sonnen announced his retirement at the top of the show. Just yesterday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that Sonnen failed a drug test for anastrozole and clomiphene in late-May, thereby canceling his scheduled July 5th bout with Vitor Belfort.
The 37-year-old thanked many people from his career, including Anderson Silva, the UFC, Fox executives and his training partners, and said he wanted to retire as he'd like to have kids with his wife.
Sonen ends his career with a 28-14-1 record and a loser of three of his last four. He had three UFC title shots during his six year run, losing to Silva twice at middleweight and once to Jon Jones. In two of those three shots, Sonnen was close to winning titles, famously tapping to a Silva triangle after 4.5 rounds of domination. Against Jones, had the fight gone to the 2nd round, it would have been stopped due to Jones' severely broken toe.
In the end, Sonnen became a big MMA star because of his ability to talk and parlayed that into a broadcasting career with Fox Sports that doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon.
