variety.com/2014/film/news/curator-acquires-u-s-on-brazils-man-exclusive-1201187185/Curator Films, a fledgling Los Angeles-based distributor, has picked up North American rights to Brazilians Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimaraes’ “The Man of The Crowd,” which premiered in Europe at Berlin’s Panorama section earlier this year. Deal was struck by FiGa Films, the L.A. sales and production company, which is a leading Brazilian film sales specialist. The film went on to win the Jury Award and best cinematography at Mexico’s Guadalajara Film Festival, and best film at Toulouse’s Cinelatino Film Festival. It has also scooped best director at the Rio Festival. Mexico’s Cineteca has also acquired all rights with a release date for next fall. The tale of a tentative relationship between a Belo Horizonte train driver and a railway traffic controller, “Man” was lensed in a box format, practically proscribing intimate two-people-framing, and often captures characters in mid-to-long shots, lost in milling crowds or dwarfed by Belo Horizonte big city architecture. “Man” is also early fruit of Brazilian regional co-production, being produced by Pernambuco’s REC Productores and Belo Horizonte’s Cinco Em Punto, the company behind Recife night club-set “Tattoo,” a five-prize winner at last October’s Rio Fest. Just before Cannes, FiGa announced the creation of a Brazilian sales company, FiGa/Br, a dedicated Brazilian movie sales house.
