In a cross-pond comedy pact, France’s Quad Films (“The Intouchables”) and Canada’s Caramel (“Starbuck”) are teaming to produce an English-language remake of Dany Boon-starrer “The Volcano” (Eyjafjallajokull).
Michael Dowse, who last directed “The F Word” with Daniel Radcliffe and Adam Driver, is on board to pen and direct the remake.
At $27 million, the big-budget comedy “The Volcano” cast Boon (“Welcome to the Sticks”) and Valerie Bonneton as a long-divorced couple who embark on the same flight to attend their daughter’s wedding in Greece. When the plane is grounded because of the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull, the pair is forced to embark on a long trip across Europe to make it to the wedding on time.
Project will mark Quad’s first English-language film. The shingle, topped by Nicolas Duval Adassovsky, Yann Zenou and Laurent Zeitoun, are best known for producing two of France’s recent biggest comedy hits: Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s “Intouchables” and Pascal Chaumeil’s “Heartbreaker.”
Caramel, on the other hand, scored big with Ken Scott’s “Starbuck,” the high-concept comedy about a middle-age man whose life is turned upside down when he learns he has fathered 533 children through sperm donation. It made more than $3 million in Canada.
Quad and Caramel are already partnering up on “Ballerina,” a period animated feature turning on a young orphan who dreams of becoming a dancer at the Paris Opera. Gaumont is co-producing and selling “Ballerina,” as well as Quad’s “Samba,” with Omar Sy in the lead role.
