variety.com/2014/film/news/cannes-the-weinstein-co-poised-to-collect-the-coup-1201184623/CANNES: The Weinstein Company is entering into exclusive negotiations to acquire North American rights to flaming hot Cannes title “The Coup” after a bidding battle. The company is understood to be paying some $5 million for the John Eric Dowdle-directed title, which stars Pierce Brosnan and Owen Wilson. The Thailand-set thriller is financed by Bold Films. Rights in international markets are repped by Sierra/Affinity, while WME handled what turned into an auction for North American rights. The sale process became a two horse race between TWC and Relativity Media after other bidders including Paramount and Open Road fell by the wayside. Relativity finally dropped out after offering $6 million but haggling over backend, according to sources. Sources say that TWC is also haggling over the backend but is confident that a deal will close tonight, May 17. Story follows an American family that relocates to SE Asia, but finds themselves caught in the middle of violent political uprising.
