With the highest grossing Warner Bros. and DC Comics superhero movies already under his belt, writer David S. Goyer has his sights set on one of the studio’s least successful adaptions — “Green Lantern.”
Goyer, who wrote the screenplays for Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy and Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” is currently working on Snyder’s still-untitled Batman vs Superman movie.
Aside from the Sandman, who could be depicted on the bigscreen by Joseph Gordon-Levitt thanks to Goyer’s pitch to WB, Goyer told ScreenRant that he’s interested in another Justice League member as well.
“I would love to do ‘Green Lantern,’” Goyer said when asked about “Man of Steel’s” depiction of an alien world versus that of “Green Lantern.” “I really wanted to showcase Krypton as a truly alien world. That was one of the things I wanted to do from the beginning when I got involved in the project. At his heart, Superman’s always been a science fiction story. I wanted to lean into that, and so did Chris, and so did Zack, so I was just glad we were able to.”
The original “Green Lantern” film with star Ryan Reynolds bombed at the box office and was panned by critics. The movie earned less than $220 million worldwide ($117 million Stateside) and reportedly cost a whopping $200 million to produce. Although the adaption was faithful to the comic book story, the film suffered from the curse of the second-tier hero, as Variety‘s Brian Lowry put it best. Comic-book audiences are less eager to support blockbusters with small-name heroes.
With rumors swirling of a Justice League pic (new WB CEO Kevin Tsujihara recently confirmed a new film series from the studio), Goyer may realize his dreams sooner than expected.
