Memphis Power Wrestling results
March 15, 2014
Tunica, Miss. at Resorts Casino
Memphis Power Wrestling returned to Resorts Casino in Tunica, just south of Memphis, on Saturday night to successfully follow up their sold-out debut card back in September 2013. Everything went smoothly including a much-improved sound system so the 850 in attendance could actually hear announcer Brandon Baxter and the wrestlers when they used the mic.
Everyone advertised was present except Sid Vicious, there was no mention given, but someone said there was a death in his family.
Brandon Baxter introduced Rocky "Soulman" Johnson to big applause; he is best known now as The Rock's father, but he was quite a wrestler back in his prime. He reminded the crowd that his son, The Rock, started right here in Memphis as Flex Cavana.
(1) Derrick King beat Reggie B. Fine at 7:15 with the aid of some tights. Some good action, but mostly comedy including the use of a baby bottle.
Former NFL player Marcus Dupree was introduced.
(2) Dr. Tom Prichard & Elizabeth beat Kevin White & Ms. Olympia (w/"Hollywood" Jimmy Blalock) at 14:05.
(3) Doug Gilbert & Cerebus (Wolfie D.) vs. Bill Dundee & Koko B. Ware went to an apparent No Contest. Koko accidentally hit Dundee, who retaliated against Ware; Gilbert and Cerebus joined in and ref Jerry Calhoun called for the bell at 11:33. Koko got the mic and railed against Dundee.
(4) X-Pac a/k/a Sean Waltman beat Dustin "Five" Starr (w/Ms. Maria) at 5:33. X-Pac clotheslined Starr over the top rope and then vaulted over the top rope onto a surprised Starr on the floor. Eventually, Starr recovered, only to have X-Pac hit the crotch face on Starr, which caused Ms. Maria to enter the ring and suffer the same fate - much to the delight of the crowd. He then hit two rights and a savat kick and then a facebuster on Starr and got the pin at 5:33. A very good , action packed match.
Afterward, Waltman thanked the fans for their support in his 27th year of wrestling. Gangrel then came out and took the mic to set up the main event, since Sid was a no-show. He said Ox Baxer taught him the Heart Punch and he would not be afraid to use it on Jerry Lawler. He asked Lawler to back-out, but a "Jerry" chant broke out and Gangrel returned to the back after some good mic work to set-up the main event.
(5) Too Cool (Brian Christopher & Scotty Too Hotty) beat "The Natural" Chase Stevens & Crimson at 18:32 in the semi-main event. The heels dominated Hotty for several minutes including a crossface chicken wing by Crimson. Hotty finally hot-tagged Christopher, who bull-dogged Stevens and crotch-dropped Crimson out of the picture. After some exchanges, Crimson took a superkick, then Christopher climbed to the top rope and hit the Tennessee Jam to pin Stevens. Excellent, action packed match - great effort by all four men.
Doug Gilbert and Cerebus, along with Bill Dundee, then charged the ring and annihilated Too Cool, giving them piledrivers and leaving the faces laid out. Eventually Christopher recovered enough to get the mic and said that next time he's calling his 400 lb. Samoan brother Rikishi to join them in a six-man tag at the next show.
Next was Jerry Lawler vs. Gangrel in the main event. Gangrel brought out a doctor from "Obamacare" because he will not be responsible if anything happens to Lawler - pretty funny stuff. Lawler declined Gangrel's offer to back out, saying Gangrel's teeth will be rolling on the mat soon.
(6) Jerry Lawler beat Gangrel at 17:37 in the main event. Gangrel used a foreign object to get the upper hand early on. Gangrel tied Lawler up in the ropes and hit the Heart Punch, causing Lawler to grimace and collapse; he did it a second time and Lawler continued to sell it. Lawler's strap finally came down, but Lawler missed a second rope fist drop allowing Gangrel to get the advantage again. Ganrel charged at Lawler in the corner, but Lawler moved. Gangrel went flush into the turnbuckles, allowing Lawler to roll him up for a three count. Good story told by both wrestlers with a good set-up, beginning, middle, and the finish.
The action lasted over two-and-a-half hours without an Intermission; they return soon with a date to be announced.
