Jeffrey Wright will voice one of the lead roles in Bremen Town Musicians, the animated reimagining of the Russian folktale and Brothers Grimm story from Cats & Dogs director Lawrence Guterman.
The bent comic romance is set in 1713, with the King of Bremen demanding that his incompetent wizard search across space and time for the greatest musical troupe ever to perform at his daughter's wedding. The rest of the plot is being kept under wraps.
Wright will voice the role of the film's antagonist Duke Henri, the narcissistic, power-hungry future son-in-law to the King of Bremen who sports an ever-changing wardrobe that matches his unpredictability. He is the first person cast in the feature.
"When I saw his stunning, subtly diabolical portrayal of Dr. Valentin Narcisse in Boardwalk Empire, I realized we'd found our Duke Henri," said Guterman.
D. Matt Geller (Night Witches) and Igor Dobrovoslky of Luxor Entertainment are producing.
Luxor is a major exhibitor and distributor in the Russian market that has also produced some local features. Bremen is positioned as a flagship animation project to put it on the global stage.
CAA-repped Wright was last seen as Beetee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, a role he will reprise for Mockingjay. He will next be seen in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, which will be released by Sony Pictures Classics on April 11. He is coming off a SAG nomination in the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series for his work in Boardwalk Empire.
Guterman, who is attached to direct Dog’s Best Friend for Gold Circle, and is executive producing Valedictorian with Mason Novick (Juno), is repped by APA and Kaplan/Perrone.
