THE FUTURE OF DC COMICS ? LOOK TO WESTERN/GOLD KEY/HARVEY !
By Bert Duckwall (Comiccollectorsguide@yahoo.com)
This hit today about a super merger between Comcast and Warner Bros. Discovery possibly happening after April 2024. The wrestling people are concerned about if they go through with this merger the future of WWE and AEW programs on their networks. We are not going to go into that, but if these two do indeed merge, the future of DC Comics looks even bleaker to me than before this rumor hit.
I would assume that David Zaslav is the clean up guy. Hired to clean up the debt and get WarnerMedia into sellable shape after the Discovery Channel boss took over their assets. Cut the waste, the fat, and most of all, the well paying jobs. Put a coat of Armor All on those tires to shine it up for the next sucker to buy this jalopy. That sucker, Comcast ?!?
My opinion on this is Zaslav would retire after he unloads this and Brian Roberts of Comcast would run the new , merger super media company. Would their be antitrust issues ? Sure, but they haven't really enforced those for over 40 years. They make them sell off some money losing assets and then all is good, as long as there is a promise the shareholders will make money.
Comcast has had the rights to Harvey Comics and Western Publishing /Gold Key characters since they acquired DreamWorks Animation. What have they done with those characters ? Oh, a few comic books here and there from Dark Horse and a Richie Rich sitcom on Netflix. Other than that, a big, fat nothing burger with those IP. No Magnus toys. No Turok comics. No Casper the Friendly Ghost reboots. Nothing. And this is the company that may ultimately get their hands on DC Comics and their library of characters ? Bad news for the 35 to 60 year old comic book collectors. Maybe you will get a Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman small universe, but long term prospects for Ambush Bug look grim !
