Though Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures started the process on reviving the Terminator franchise, she has divested herself financially of involvement in the final two or three pictures that will now be solely financed by her brother David Ellison’s Skydance and Paramount Pictures. This has been confirmed to me, and I’m told she will retain an executive producer credit. No one was specific about how the funding of the films will be handled, but I’ve heard that Skydance will now fund 66%, and Paramount will pay for the rest. Others say this has not been determined, as the film is now being budgeted.
Coupled with a changeover at the top of her sales company Panorama yesterday, it might seem that Megan Ellison is tapering off. I don’t believe that’s the case. Even when she took control of The Terminator franchise when she paid $20 million or more to acquire the rights at auction around the time of Cannes 2011, this property was an anomaly for her. Her heart is in taste-maker auteur-driven fare, and she has become a patron saint of prestige films that might not otherwise get made. That is what she will focus on. Her efforts include recently named Best Picture nominees American Hustle and Her, last year’s Zero Dark Thirty and The Master, and the upcoming Bennett Miller-directed Foxcatcher.
For her brother David, Terminator: Genesis and possibly two other films to wrap up the storyline are right in his wheelhouse. He’s at home co-financing and producing large-scale popcorn pictures, and this one fits right in with his other franchises: Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and World War Z. Both of the Ellison siblings confirmed this has happened.
“Skydance Productions focuses on elevated event-level film making and the relaunch of this iconic franchise is a perfect match for our company,” said David Ellison. “I am very confident in our top-notch creative team and the material driving this project. I’m grateful to Megan, who will remain involved as an executive producer, and for initially bringing the Terminator franchise to us. I look forward to our continued creative partnership as we prep for production in April.”
Said Megan Ellison: “We have been working closely with the filmmakers and have the utmost faith in their abilities. We love this project and the direction it is going in, but for now Annapurna’s primary focus is to produce independent films. As I am staying on as executive producer, I am looking forward to working closely with David and Paramount to make a film that will live up to the brands’ legacy and one that I know audiences will love.”
Most of the casting has been done for Terminator: Genesis, with Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his signature cyborg, Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke playing Sarah Connor, and Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke playing John Connor. They are in the midst of setting an actor to play Kyle Reese for the time-travel tale that is being directed by Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor.

The Terminator reboot, Genesis, may be close to rounding out its Connor/Reese family.
With Emilia Clarke already in place as a young Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke as a future version of John Connor, Deadline now reports the search for Kyle Reese is down to two contenders: Australian actor Jai Courtney and American Boyd Holbrook.
This film is rumored to take place over multiple timelines, including, probably, a When Kyle Met Sarah meet-cute origin story.
It will also have a previously reported TV component, set to air the fall after the film releases in 2015, which may or may not spin off yet another alternate timeline – since I assume the movie stars won’t be making an appearance on the small screen spinoff.
Filming is imminent if not already underway, and Terminator: Genesis already has a July 1, 2015 release date.

From: www.deadline.com/2014/02/jai-courtney-terminator-genesis-kyle-reese-role/The casting for one of the key characters in Paramount and Skydance Productions’ Terminator: Genesis is almost complete — but not finalized. What’s true is that Jai Courtney has been offered the role of Kyle Reese, a gig that figures to span at least two movies that will end the story of Skynet’s battle with the resistance that began with James Cameron’s two films and two more that followed. As we told you last week, it was down to Courtney and Boyd Holbrook to land the Reese role originated by Michael Beihn in the first pic. If the Courtney deal makes, he will join Arnold Schwarzenegger as the signature cyborg, Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke as Sara Connor and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke as her son John Connor in the time-travel saga that will be directed by Alan Taylor. The film has a July 1, 2015 released date. The films are being financed one-third by Paramount and two-thirds by David Ellison’s Skydance, who bought out the stake held by his sister, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison. She was the one who originally bought the rights to continue the franchise for about $20 million. Courtney is coming off Jack Reacher and A Good Day To Die Hard, and will next be seen in Divergent. He also shot the Angelina Jolie-directed Unbroken and Russell Crowe-helmed The Water Diviner. He’s repped by UTA and Silver Lining Entertainment.

FROM: www.bleedingcool.com/2014/03/02/fresh-character-plot-and-production-details-of-the-new-terminator-movie/I knew that casting for supporting roles on the new Terminator movie was underway but hadn’t been able to conjure up a breakdown myself. It looks like Moviehole were able to secure one, however, as they’ve listed a number of characters from the original movie that will be reappearing in this next instalment. It’s quite a revealing roster. What follows will count as spoiler material. I bet you’ll see a lot of this in the trailer, but not all of it. You may wish to opt out of reading on. So… who’s coming back? First of all, we’re going to see that gang of 1984 street punks from the first film. Some poor soul is going to have to follow in the footsteps of Bill Paxton. Tough act to follow. We’ll also see Sarah Connor’s flatmate, Ginger, and the cops Vukovich and Traxler. Again, good luck following Lance Henriksen. But after this, the film is going to hop forward to the events of Judgment Day with John’s foster parents Todd and Janelle. That’s a lot of recurring roles that will need new actors to fill them. Beyond the looky likey stuff, there’s also going to be a number of scenes set throughout other parts of Sarah Connor’s life, including her very early years. Another catch, I believe, is that there’s going to be at least two Terminators, and at least two of them will played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. By intervening in the timeline of the original films these new “good” and “bad” Terminators are going to subvert the course of events as portrayed before. This will create a new “seqboot” timeline that you might compare to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek or, as Moviehole did, the last section of Back to the Future 2. Sounds like a fun conceit if they can pull it off. What’s particularly interesting are the plans to create a spin-off TV series that can run alongside the new movie timeline without depending on the stars of the films. It’s been supposed that this will be an alternative, parallel timeline that splinters Sliding Doors-style fromthe events of the next picture though, as far as I know, that’s not been confirmed. Production on Terminator, which is possibly called Terminator: Genesis, will get underway in May. We know this because Schwarzenegger has said so himself, speaking to The Arnold Fans. We start filming in the middle or in the end of April and it will be a four or four-and-a-half month long shoot. We will be filming it in New Orleans with some of it in San Francisco and maybe a little of it in LA but most of it will be done in New Orleans. I’m really looking forward to that because as you know, the last time when they did the Terminator, it was when I was Governor and so I couldn’t be in that movie but now I’m back again and they are very excited about having me in the film. Well, I would suppose they are. Schwarzenegger is to terminating robot as David Bowie is to alien sex elf. Some people are born to play one role above all others. Alan Taylor is directing, Emilia Clarke is playing the new “main” Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney are in as the adult John Connor and Kyle Reese respectively. The fruits of their efforts will be revealed on July 1st next year.

From: www.dreadcentral.com/news/74345/first-terminator-genesis-plot-details-revealed-schwarzenegger-gives-script-two-thumbs#axzz2v0JwMbmWEven though it's headed our way in a little over a year, we still know next to nothing about Terminator: Genesis, the fifth installment in the storied franchise. Today some beans have been spilled. Read on! First, MovieHole reports that they've learned from a reputable source that the film is being dubbed a fresh reboot but that it will also revisit iconic moments from the first two Terminator films. So, essentially, it's looking like it's going to be a reboot that's tailor-made for fans of the originals, which sounds like music to our ears. The film will take us back and forward between the future, 1984 (The Terminator), 1991 (Terminator 2 : Judgement Day) and other important and influential time periods in the life of the Connor family. Iconic scenes, including the Terminator's arrival on Earth, will be given a fresh new makeover, making the film both a reboot and its own movie. The Arnold Fans also reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger is very happy with the Terminator: Genesis script and is excited to reprise one of his most memorable roles. "The movie preparation is going well. The script is fantastic so I’m really looking forward to this film," says Arnie. The four-month shoot is set to begin in April, with the film being primarily shot in New Orleans. A July 2015 release is planned at this time. Jai Courtney will play Kyle Reese alongside Emilia Clarke's Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke's John Connor. Skydance and Annapurna will co-finance along with Paramount with David Ellison producing for Skydance and Megan Ellison producing for Annapurna. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier penned the script, and Alan Taylor will direct.

From: www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/jk-simmons-joins-terminator-genesis-688177J.K. Simmons is in negotiations to join the cast of Terminator: Genesis, the reboot of the sci-fi action franchise being made by Skydance and Paramount. The remake will thread together multiple ideas from the previous movies as it relaunches the story of a cyborg from a future where computers gained intelligence and waged war against mankind. Emilia Clarke is playing Sarah Connor, the woman first saved by Kyle Reese, a fighter from the future and inadvertent father of future resistance leader John Connor. Jason Clarke (no relation to Emilia Clarke) is playing John Connor, while Jai Courtney will be playing Reese. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back as Terminator -- whether he is good or bad remains to be seen. According to sources, Simmons will play a weary and alcoholic detective who has followed a bizarre case involving Sarah Connor and robots for more than three decades (since 1984, which, not coincidentally, is the year the original movie, directed by James Cameron, was released). Alan Taylor is directing the movie, which is due to start shooting this spring. Simmons is currently on NBC's midseason comedy Growing Up Fisher and is coming off the Sundance premiere of the buzzed-about drama Whiplash. The movie, in which Simmons stars opposite Miles Teller, won the festival's grand jury prize and audience prize and was snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics. Simmons is repped by Gersh and Michael Goldman Management.

www.bleedingcool.com/2014/03/25/schwarzengger-explains-why-his-new-terminator-will-look-so-much-older-and-other-bits-of-business/When Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises the role of the T-800 in the upcoming Terminator: Genesis, he’ll be doing so as a man of 66 years. He won’t look quite like he did back in Terminator 3, let alone T2, and definitely not the original Terminator. But this, as he explained to MTV, will make sense as part of the film’s narrative. The way that the character is written, it’s a machine underneath. It’s this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator’s flesh ages, just like any other human being’s flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages. I had assumed some CG de-aging was to be required, possibly performance capture. I think it may still be necessary, as Schwarzenegger’s explanation of the plot features not only the aged T-800 but a younger version too. Terminator deals a lot with time travel, so there will be a younger T-800 and then what that model does later on when it gets reprogrammed, and who gets ahold of him. So it will be all kinds of interesting twists in the movie, but I feel so good. That does sound interesting. It may have been borne out of a desire to get Arnie back – there was a promise to keep – but it’s opened up a whole load of timey wimey possibilities. I’m looking forward to this one a good deal. It’d be lovely for this to all come together and give us another Terminator film to treasure, and some post-Governor Schwarzenegger that’s strong enough to wipe away the bad taste.

variety.com/2014/film/news/jai-courtney-officially-signs-on-to-terminator-genesis-1201148987/After working out a deal where Jai Courtney is able to do both “Terminator: Genesis” and Summit’s “Insurgent,” the Aussie actor has officially signed on to play Kyle Reese in “Terminator: Genesis.” While he was the choice to play Reese in the Paramount and Skydance action pic, Courtney came close to falling off since his shooting schedule with “Terminator: Genesis” looked to overlap with the production of “Insurgent.” Sources now say a deal has been worked out where he is able to shoot both films this year. With his deal officially closed, the latest installment in the “Terminator” franchise is closer to production as Courtney’s co-stars Emilia Clarke and Jason Clarke had already signed on to the pic. Alan Taylor is directing. Plot details have not been revealed, other than this is the first film in a standalone trilogy. Skydance will finance along with the studio, with David Ellison producing for Skydance. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier penned the script. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake are on as exec producers. Paramount will handle distribution. Courtney is repped by UTA, Mark Morrissey and Associates and Silver Linings Entertainment and can be seen in “Divergent,” which is currently in theaters.

www.deadline.com/2014/03/dayo-okeniyi-lands-final-terminator-lead/In what should be a star-making role, Dayo Okeniyi has dayobeen set to star in Terminator: Genesis, the franchise reboot for Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures. And here is some more good news for fans: they have made first plans to shoot three installments to put this saga to rest. The second and third films will be done back to back over nine months. The first film gets underway shortly in Louisiana. Okeniyi and John Boyega were the two top choices for this pivotal final role, and this came down to a tug of war between storied franchises The Terminator and JJ Abrams and Star Wars, which also wanted Okeniyi to test for one of the leads of that film. Paramount and Skydance’s David Ellison stepped up and the actor unpacked his bags. Okeniyi, who co-starred in The Hunger Games and The Spectacular Now, will play a Steve Jobs genius who figures heavily into the conclusion of the film. He is Danny Dyson, who is also the son of the brainiac cyborg developer Miles Dyson, played by Joe Morton in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The young man holds the key to technology development that makes Skynet possible. He’s repped by UTA, Sweeney Entertainment, and attorney Joel McKuin. The other leads were already set. Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke is Sara Connor, Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke is her son John Connor, Jai Courtney is locked as Kyle Reese, and Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his signature cyborg, in the time-travel saga that will be directed by Alan Taylor. The film has a July 1, 2015 released date.

blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/rumored-connection-between-terminator-genesis-and-original-the-terminator-revealed-20140502The plans for the sorta-not-quite reboot "Terminator: Genesis" are pretty big. Not only will it potentially spawn a new trilogy, but a new TV series that will tie into the film(s) is also in the works. Let's not forget, the film will feature the son of Miles Dyson, and now it seems it's going to reach all the way back to James Cameron's original 1984 "The Terminator." Spoilers ahead, duh. Drew McWeeney at HitFix (via JoBlo) has apparently read a draft of the script, and shared how 'Genesis' and "The Terminator" will share worlds and timelines. Read on: There is a scene in the script where, literally, we see the scene from the first TERMINATOR film where Arnold steps out, the punks threaten him, he rips [Brian Thompson]'s heart out and takes his clothes and wanders off. And as soon as that scene ends, another Arnold Schwarzenegger who is older and bearded and a very different version of the Terminator walks in from the side and plays another scene right at the scene of that first incident. Now remember, Arnie has already teased that his T-800 in the movie, will be aging. "The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages," he said earlier this spring. We'll say this....it's more interesting an approach that we would've figured, and while we're still cautious, we're compelled to see how it plays out. That being said, drafts change and a lot can happen from script to screen, so who knows if this idea will still make into the finished film. Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney and J.K. Simmons also feature in the Alan Taylor directed movie that will drop on July 1, 2015. Until then, here's the scene referenced above and let us know what you think about this timeline juggling.

variety.com/2014/film/news/doctor-whos-matt-smith-joins-terminator-reboot-1201170173/Recently departed “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith has been cast in Paramount and Skydance Production’s reboot of the “Terminator” franchise. Emilia Clarke and Jason Clarke, who are of no relation to each other, have already been cast as Sarah and John Connor – character names that are already familiar to fans of the franchise that started with the 1984 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor, the studio reported. Alan Taylor is directing the film from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. The cast also includes Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee and, of course, Schwarzenegger. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance are producing. Skydance’s Paul Schwake, Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison, Kalogridis and Lussier are executive producing. Smith is repped by United Talent Agency and Michael Duff at Troika. Paramount will distribute the film worldwide on July 1, 2015. Variety sister site Deadline Hollywood broke the news of the casting.
