MLW ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS: FIRST ROUND MATCHES
BY JJ WILLIAMS | @jjwilliamswon | FEB 9, 2018 8:43 AM
Approximately 300 people attended last night's MLW show, which included the beginning of a tournament to crown the MLW World Heavyweight Champion.
- Santana Garrett defeated Lacey Lane
Garrett won with the Shining Star Press.
- Destino Negro defeated Mega Danger
An avalanche destroyer from the top ended this fast-paced lucha spectacle.
- Team Filthy (Seth Petruzelli & Simon Grimm) defeated Team TBD (Jason Cade & Jimmy Yuta)
A distraction by Colonel Robert Parker and The Dirty Blondes led to the finish.
- Low Ki (w/ Stokely Hathaway) defeated Koko Brazil
This ended quickly. Low Ki unmasked his opponent and proceeded to further punish him after the match with a kick to the back of the head.
Hathaway noted that MLW made a mistake by not including his client in the tournament.
- Chelsea Green defeated Priscilla Kelly by DQ
Kelly refused to break a choke by the referee's five count and was disqualified. Santana Garrett made the save and ran Kelly off.
- Austin Aries defeated ACH
The crowd loved these two and did dueling chants throughout. ACH finally went for the 450, but Aries got his knees up. Aries won with a brainbuster.
Following the match, Aries said he wasn't in the Heavyweight title tournament but he'd be in the future Middleweight title picture.
- Mike Parrow & Barrington Hughes defeated Saieve Al Sabah & Vandal Ortagun
Another fast match. Hughes was Parrow's surprise partner and crushed Ortagun.
- Jimmy Havoc defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman in a World Championship tournament first round match
This was a great matchup. Both characters were so strong in what they are and what they wanted that it blended perfectly.
MJF refused to leave the ring because he knows Havoc is a brawler. Havoc was tempted to use a chair, but he stopped because he knew he would get disqualified and have his chance at the title taken away. Havoc countered a tombstone into one of his own for the win.
- Shane Strickland defeated Brody King in a World Championship tournament first round match
Strickland was thrown into the corner hard early, then he sold for most of the match as King demolished him. Strickland survived and hit his double stomp off the top to advance in the tournament.
- "Filthy" Tom Lawlor defeated MVP in a World Championship tournament first round match
Stokely Hathaway and Low Ki interfered, with Ki hitting a kick on MVP that allowed Lawlor to win.
Before leaving, Lawlor dropped a white belt on MVP after the match.
- Matthew Riddle defeated Jeff Cobb in a World Championship tournament first round match
They started slow with grappling and sportsmanship before kicking it up a gear as Cobb threw Riddle around with some incredible strength. There was a huge delayed middle rope suplex, countless gutwrench suplexes, and throws.
Riddle survived and won with a powerbomb and knee strike combo.
- Darby Allin defeated Sami Callihan in a hardcore match
Callihan hit Allin with everything. He hit a piledriver from the middle ropes through a table, threw Allin off the ropes into the balcony, did dives to the outside, and duct taped Allin's arms. But Callihan was no match for the outside interference by Jimmy Havoc.
Allin then tried to hold Callihan, but Joey Janela appeared, tripped Havoc, and hit Allin with a bottle before lighting up a cigarette as the show ended.
