Love Is Strange, the new film by Ira Sachs which made its premiere last night at Eccles and got a rousing response including standing ovations for Alfred Molina and John Lithgow, has made a deal for French distribution with Pretty Pictures in a six-figure deal. The pic is in play for a domestic deal at well.
Pretty Pictures’ James Velaise called the film “one of the best American independents we have seen in a long time. We were immediately taken by Ira Sachs’ elegant and poignant portrayal of human relationships. The performances are top-notch, with John Lithgow and Alfred Molina delivering understated excellence.” Fortissimo’s Aranka Matits and Nicole Mackey made the deal. Pretty Pictures’s recent releases of fest-centric films includes Winter’s Bone, Meeks Cutoff, Compliance and Detachment, and Wadjda. Next up are Dancing In Jaffa and the Jessica Chastain-starrer Miss Julie. WME Global is repping domestic rights.

Sony Pictures Classics is acquiring Love Is Strange, the film scripted and directed by Ira Sachs that stars Alfred Molina, John Lithgow, Kelly Reilly, Tracy Letts, Marisa Tomei and Cheyenne Jackson. The timely film is about two longtime gay lovers who finally get married. One of them then gets fired and is unable to pay the rent. The couple must move in, separately, with a nephew and his family in Brooklyn and the two gay cops next door. The film got a strong response when it premiered last Saturday at the Eccles Theater. The deal is being made by WME Global. The film also got a French distribution deal with Pretty Pictures right after its premiere.
