New Line Nabs Shawn Levy's Superhero Crime Thriller 'Pulse' (Exclusive)
'Stranger Things' writer Jessie Nickson-Lopez will write the script with Levy and 21 Laps principal Dan Cohen producing.
New Line Cinema has a Pulse.
The company has picked up the unique superhero-crime project that sees producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps reteaming with their Stranger Things writer Jessie Nickson-Lopez.
Nickson-Lopez developed a pitch that adapts Pulse, an upcoming novel by Michael Harvey. She will now write the script.
Pulse is a grounded take on the superhero origin and coming-of-age story that bridges crime with science fiction. The story follows a teenager investigating the murder of his older brother alongside the police. During this period, and with the help of a mysterious mentor, the young man begins developing a unique ability that helps him uncover the truth and protect himself along the way.
Michael Disco and Dave Neustadter are overseeing for New Line.
Nickson-Lopez, currently writing on Narcos, wrote on both seasons of Netflix's Stranger Things, the pop-culture phenomenon that returns for season two in October. (She wrote episode six, "The Monster," which featured the tense standoff between the boys, Eleven and the bullies at the cliffs at the rock quarry.) Pulse marks Nickson-Lopez's feature film writing debut.
Harvey is a crime writer — his latest, Brighton, was released earlier this year, with the film rights picked up by producer Graham King — as well as an investigative journalist who co-created A&E’s forensic series Cold Case Files. Pulse will be published next year by Ecco.
21 Laps is coming off 18 Emmy nominations for Stranger Things, including for best drama series. The trailer for season two debuted last month at San Diego Comic Con. The company is in postproduction on three upcoming features, including Fox’s YA sci-fi thriller The Darkest Minds, Lionsgate’s James Franco thriller Kin and indie drama Kodachrome.
Nickson-Lopez is repped by CAA, 3Arts and attorney Patti Felker. Harvey is repped by Paradigm and literary agent David Gernert.
