Fred Mound, Former Universal Pictures Distribution President, Dies at 84
The industry veteran and St. Louis native also worked at United Artists for 25 years.
Fred Mound, a longtime executive at Universal Pictures and United Artists who served as Universal's president of distribution in the 1990s, has died. He was 84.
Mound, who spent more than five decades in the industry, died Jan. 27 in Los Angeles after a brief illness, his family announced.
A native of St. Louis and a lifelong Cardinals fan, Mound began in the business in 1946 by working at the Park Theatre, which was owned by his family, at age 14.
Mound was hired as a booker by Universal in 1952, then returned to the company in 1981 as a vp and assistant general sales manager. He headed distribution from 1990 until his retirement six years later. (Mound was succeeded by Nikki Rocco, who held the job until her retirement in 2004.)
In 1953, Mound had left the studio to join UA when he was promised a raise of $10 a week. He worked in positions throughout the Midwest and the South before heading to New York as a vp and assistant general sales manager in 1976.
Mound then came to Los Angeles two years later after being named a vp at Associated Film Distribution.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Fanny Belle; children Carol (and her husband David), Kim (and her husband Steve) and Fred; and grandchildren John, Sam, Eli, Tyre, Isabelle, Johnathan and Katharine.
A celebration of his life will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday at Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or The Burbank Public Library.
