For Disney, 2014 will be a big year, with a fresh crop of comicbook heroes ready to take on the box office in anticipation of 2015′s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” August 1 sees the release of space adventure “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and for the first time Marvel has released the official synopsis for the film:
An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
Disney and Marvel get a jump on the summer blockbuster season on April 4 with the release of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the sequel to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.” And staking out the Memorial Day weekend, Disney will premiere live-action fairy tale “Maleficent,” with Angelina Jolie starring in the untold story of the villain from the 1959 version of “Sleeping Beauty.”
Lasse Hallstrom’s inspirational adaptation “The Hundred Foot Journey,”produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, has reserved the femme-friendly Aug. 8 slot that’s done so well for pics like “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “The Help.”
On Oct. 10, the live-action adaptation of popular kids book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” comes to life, starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.
Continuing the fairy tale theme, Christmas day musical “Into the Woods” combines the plots of several dark stories including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel, played by Anna Kendrick, Lilla Crawford and Daniel Huttlestone, respectively. Meryl Streep is the eerie witch who ties all of the plotlines together.
