Amazon Prime Video Gets All ‘Matrix,’ ‘Lethal Weapon’ Movies Under Warner Bros. Exclusive Pact
Amazon is stocking up on films from Warner Bros.’ library, inking a pact with the studio that will make Prime Video service the exclusive subscription-streaming service for 33 titles, including the full “The Matrix” trilogy and all four “Lethal Weapon” movies.
WB titles currently available on Amazon Prime Video include “Mystic River,” “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “The American President” and Adam Sandler’s “The Wedding Singer.” Those will be followed by new additions rolling out each month through the fall, with future movies to include “Caddyshack,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “You’ve Got Mail” and the first three “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movies.
With the exclusive WB licensing deal, Amazon is seeking to build up its movie buffer against rival Netflix — whose lineup of movies has shrunk over the past year, according to a study by Barclays released this spring. All told, Amazon Prime had about four times the number of movies available for streaming than Netflix did as of the end of March, per the Barclays report.
Since then, Netflix in the U.S. has added a number of big movies, including Oscar-winner “Spotlight” and “The Big Short,” and noted that its exclusive output deal with Disney for theatrical releases will begin in the fall of 2016 for U.S. subscribers. Netflix’s movie count had declined because its deal with Epix, representing about 2,000 titles, ended in September 2015. The Epix movies are now available on both Hulu and Amazon Prime.
Amazon is now exclusively streaming the following Warner Bros. movies under the new pact: “The American President,” “Barcelona,” “Good Night, And Good Luck,” “Grumpier Old Men,” “JFK,” “Mystic River,” “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “See Spot Run,” “Space Jam,” “Storytelling,” “Twister” and “The Wedding Singer.”
WB movies set to be added to Prime Video in the next few months are: “Any Given Sunday,” “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” “Caddyshack,” “The Candidate,” “The Devil’s Advocate,” “Dreamcatcher,” “Final Destination,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Interview With the Vampire,” “Lethal Weapon,” “Lethal Weapon 2,” “Lethal Weapon 3,” “Lethal Weapon 4,” “The Matrix,” “The Matrix Reloaded,” “The Matrix Revolutions,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3,” “Training Day” and “You’ve Got Mail.”
