STX Entertainment Nabs ‘17 Bridges’, Finalizing Deal For Russo Brothers To Produce
Having grabbed both Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game as well as the coveted international rights for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman in big bidding wars at Cannes, STX Entertainment has now just nabbed a spec script stateside and is in final negotiations with Captain America: Civil War (and CA: Winter Soldier) filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to produce. The script, 17 Bridges written by Adam Mervis, has been described as Inside Man meets The Fugitive.
The thriller follows a disgraced detective in the NYPD who is given a shot at redemption. Thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, he begins to undercover a massive conspiracy that links his fellow cops to a criminal empire and must decide who he is hunting and who is actually hunting him. During the manhunt, Manhattan is completely locked down for the first time in its history – no exit or entry to the island including all 17 bridges.
Getaway Prods President, Mike Larocca, will also produce. STX was said to have beaten out Sony, Warner Bros., and Universal for the property.
17 Bridges comes to a company with strong relationships in China and after the Russos’ China-based film company Anthem teamed with Beijing FangJin Visual Media Culture Communication Co. to create an action sci-fi film titled The Hero’s Awakening directed by Chinese helmer Feng Mushui. They are also in development as producers of a remake of the classic The Thomas Crown Affair for MGM as a starring vehicle for Michael B. Jordan.
STX also just signed a deal with Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions for a new animated project that Sandler will write, produce and star in. And it also announced during CinemaCon a new project with Sylvester Stallone with Lawrence Grey producing via his Grey Matter Productions.
Mervis began as a playwright before turning his attention to film. Joel Silver produced his first film, The Philly Kid which was released by Warner Bros. He currently is at work on his original series for USA called Midnights, which he created.
Mervis was repped by Paradigm and Grandview. The Russos are repped by WME.
