Post-Bankruptcy Relativity Sets ‘Masterminds,’ Other Release Dates
Relativity Studios, newly emerged from bankruptcy, announced that it will release four films during the remainder of 2016, the first movies to come out of the company since in slipped into Chapter 11 protection last July.
The company founded by Ryan Kavanaugh said that “Before I Wake,” a horror film starring Kate Bosworth, will debut Sept. 9. The movie was directed by Mike Flanagan and also stars Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane and Annabeth Gish. It had previously been set for release on Oct. 16, according to a declaration filed with the bankruptcy court.
Next up, the company slated “Masterminds,” a crime comedy starring Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, for Sept 30. Jared Hess directed the movie, which was produced by Lorne Michaels (“Baby Mama,” “Mean Girls”) and John Goldwyn (“The Guilt Trip,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”) The company had previously set a Sept. 16 lunch.
The studio chose Nov. 18 for the release of “The Disappointments Room,” a haunted-attic picture starring Kate Beckinsale, Lucas Till, Michaela Conlin and Gerald McRaney. It was directed by D.J. Caruso and produced by Sam Englebardt (“Sin City”). The company had previously announced a Dec. 16 debut.
Relativity plans to end the year with the Dec. 2 release of “Kidnap,” a thriller starring Halle Berry and directed by Luis Prieto. The film was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Transformers,” “Salt”) and Joey Tufaro.
The company said it also plans to release “Solace,” a thriller with Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell, some time this year. It has not yet dated the film.
Relativity’s films were repeatedly delayed during its time under court protection. But the company has said it’s prepared to resume normal operations, as it continues to look for new investors and for a loan to pay for future film releases.
