DC Comics, Gerard Way team for Mature Spin-off Imprint “Young Animals”
Hot on the heels of DC’s newest relaunch, Rebirth, DC Comics has announced a new imprint at this year’s Seattle’s Emerald City Comic Con. Titled “Young Animal,” the imprint will be headed by comic writer and My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way. Previously known for his award-winning work on THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY and THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS, Way will bring his love of early Vertigo titles into the new line.
He has announced four comics for Young Animal thus far. First up is the re-launch of DOOM PATROL, made most famous by the Grant Morrison run in the early ‘90s. The new version will be helmed by Way himself and illustrated by Nick Derington. Way states that he intends to keep the comic true not only to the Morrison version but to the previous versions before it. It is planned to be released in September 2016.
Next will be a twist on an old favorite, SHADE THE CHANGING WOMAN, written by Cecil Catelluci and illustrated by Marley Zarcone. The comic will focus on a younger protagonist that falls into a coma and is infused with the alien known as Shade.
A third title called CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE will focus on the old ‘60s character, Cave Carson, and will finally explain why said character has a cybernetic eye. He was first introduced by Jack Kirby in CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN and went on to star in his own adventures before falling by the wayside. The title will be written by Way and illustrated by Jon Rivera and Michael Avon.
Finally, an original title will also be joining the roster titled MOTHER PANIC. Not too many details out about this particular work but the words ‘violent heiress,’ ‘GOTHAM,’ and ‘ V FOR VENDETTA meets BATMAN: YEAR ONE’ were dropped. This work will be handled by Jody Houser with pencil duties by Tommy Lee Edwards.
